As of writing, on the 7th of November 2020, Joe Biden is the 46th President-Elect of the United States of America. Whilst Biden was in the lead for days, Pennsylvania was the key decisive state that allowed him to go over the 270 Electoral College mark.

This is Biden’s third time running for the White House. He ran for election prior to this in 1988, but withdrew after being caught out from plagiarizing a speech, and in 2008, however dropped out and became Obama’s Vice-President. Biden was the Vice-President for the eight years of Obama’s term in office, from 2009 to 2017.

By the time of his inauguration, which will be held in January 2021, Biden will be the oldest President so far of the USA, at 78 years of age.

Biden is beloved by the public, with some dancing in the streets after the news was announced. Additionally, celebrities such as James Corden, Taylor Swift and Cher, have all used their social media accounts to endorse Biden and get people to vote for him. It is perhaps due to this persuasive celebrity endorsement that encouraged so many voters, with the 2020 elections having the highest turnout since 1900. Biden has even broken the record for the most votever for a US Presidential candidate, with over 74 million votes so far being cast in his favour.

It is equally a momentous achievement for Vice President-Elect, Kamala Harris. Harris will be the first female, first Black and first South Asian American vice president of the White House. A video of Kamala letting Biden know of their successful win in the US elections received millions of views in the first few hours it was released, showing extreme joy at the news.

Whilst this is a great celebration for Biden supporters, it is a bitter defeat for the Republian party and its supporters. Whilst normally the losing candidate would concede, Mr Trump has vowed to contest the election results. He demands a recount in Georgia and Wisconsin, and has also stated that he will be taking legal action to the Supreme Court for alleged voting fraud, without evidence.

It is unclear at the moment what will be the result of the legal action and vote count that Trump plans to take. No matter what happens though, this election certainly marks a different path for America.
