Radar Meets: RGU Photography Society

What’s the story behind the Photography Society and why did you take the lead in starting it?

The RGU Photography Society was originally started from a group chat in the RGU Freshers 2014 page. Sanjay Kumar, asked on the group page if there was a photography club or society at RGU.

I was interested too, and looked on the RGU:Union website. There was no existing society and so after reading the many messages of students expressing an interest in Sanjay’s message, I decided to start up the society.  All credit goes to Sanjay! 

Since then I have held the position of President since 2014 and along with committee members Claire, Lauren and Abi, we have developed the society for RGU students and staff.

Can anyone join? Do you need to own a camera?

I was a complete beginner to photography, and I still am! The aim of the Society is to allow all RGU students to learn and develop their skills in photography. We welcome all levels and all camera types - smartphone photography is just as important (and interesting) as using DSLR cameras.

You do not need to personally own a camera (although most of our members are keen photographers and have their own). We can provide cameras for more technical workshops where we require a DSLR but you can also take out a camera from the Media Hub located in ABS.

We heard that you’ve been on some photography walks! Where did you go?

Our walks have focused mainly in Aberdeen due to ease of travel. There are lots of lovely places in Aberdeen such as Johnstone Gardens and the Botanical Gardens at the University of Aberdeen. The beach and the city centre are also full of interesting history to capture.

What other events have you had in the past?
Previously we have had photo walks, guest speakers and workshops where we have asked Gray’s School of Art photography students to help members. 

We have also been asked my various groups in RGU (and outside in the wider community) to take photos at events. This is a fantastic opportunity for our members and RGU students who are interested in pursuing an interest or even a career in photography.

We have also just finished a competition in association with the RGU Mental Wellbeing Society. The competition called “January Blues” aimed to raise awareness of mental health through creative professions such as photography. This was a great success and shows the diverse range photography has.

What are the future plans for the society?

We are looking forward to trying new workshops and also exhibitions of members work.  In terms of future plans I hope the society continues to grow and develop further to enable all students to try their hand at photography!
