Candidate for the position of Vice President (Welfare)

MEL COLQUHOUN

What relevant experience, skills and qualities do you have that make you a strong candidate for this elected position?

I have been student rep for my first year and I have been one of the Equality Champions for my second year.
During my time at RGU I have worked hard to be an advocate for my fellow students and developed strong relationships with them and staff to create excellent lines of communication. I have also been active in creating several forums and building a community within my school and working to build a strong relationship with the student Union and the rest of the campus.
Therefore it is my steadfast commitment to champion welfare and well-being.
As a candidate for the role of Vice President of Welfare, I will work hard to make students time at RGU one of inclusivity, compassion, and advocacy. With their support I will undertake this commitment to create a campus environment where every student feels valued, supported, and empowered to thrive.

Priority Aim 1

Diversity and Inclusion: Our strength lies in our diversity, and it is imperative that every student feels a sense of belonging on campus. I will strive to create a culture of inclusivity by advocating for the needs of marginalised communities, promoting cultural comprehension, and organising events that celebrate our rich tapestry of identities and experiences. Let us embrace our differences and stand together.

Priority Aim 2

Student Advocacy and Support: As your Vice President of Welfare, I will actively listen to your concerns, help to amplify your voices, and advocate for policies and initiatives that address your needs. As an ally you will have my unwavering commitment to serving your best interests.

Priority Aim 3

Academic Support and Success: Every student deserves the opportunity to excel academically, regardless of their background or circumstances. I will collaborate with faculty and administration to ensure that students have access to resources for learning and study. I am committed to empowering every student to reach their full academic potential by bringing the resources our university offers to the forefront, so they can be accessed and utilised fully by students.

What is the biggest issue currently facing RGU students, and how will you work with the rest of the Student Presidents and Vice Presidents to tackle this?

I recognise that mental health and mental wellbeing is paramount to student success and happiness. As Vice President of Welfare, I will prioritise the expansion of mental health resources and support services on campus. I will work tirelessly to reduce stigma, increase awareness, and promote self-care initiatives.
Together we are strongest: therefore with the rest of the Student Presidents, Vice Presidents and the student body behind us, we can build a community where seeking help is encouraged and no student feels alone in their struggles.
