What relevant experience, skills and qualities do you have that make you a strong candidate for this elected position?

Hi, I am Jill Adam, a fourth year Applied Sport and Exercise Science Student. I am a member of the rowing club as RGU President and Senior Coxswain. The past 4 years working within sport, as Vice President and a Spat member, alongside 3 previous Sport presidents have allowed me to gain an inside knowledge of how sports clubs and the RGU Union is run first hand. As the president and coxswain within the rowing club it has developed my quick thinking, decision making and organisational skills for the weekly running of sessions, race day timings and the planning that goes into away competitions. Sport has been an important for all of my life. I have enjoyed the challenge of undertaking the role of Vice President of Sport and I hope you will consider voting for me as the new President of Sport and Physical Activity.

Priority Aim 1

Recreation sport
The incorporation of recreational squads into the university will allow for a greater number of people to enjoy the sport, with or without competition. Why shouldn’t everyone find and take part in a sport they love?

Priority Aim 2

Coaching
Less than 10 of our sports clubs receive training from a qualified coach. This places remaining sports at a disadvantage when competing against other Scottish and UK Universities. Outsourcing for volunteer coaches is a challenge all clubs are facing in achieving the right fit. Encouraging current and new members to undertake coaching courses would hopefully improve the training on a weekly basis. Volunteers are still key to the running of all our various sports teams. The incorporation of the Sport Science and Sports Coaching students would allow for club development and increase the availability of coaches and coaching sessions.

Priority Aim 3

Inclusivity
Sport is known for its diversity and inclusive polices. This should be the ultimate target for RGU clubs, societies, and groups. Further education on how the clubs can adapt to be more inclusive for the individual members with not only disabilities but aspects of mental health conditions or require day to day support. Sport clubs should be a place for everyone to enjoy and develop new or existing skills no matter their gender, race, sexuality, or religion.

What is the biggest issue currently facing RGU students, and how will you work with the rest of the Student Presidents and Vice Presidents to tackle this?

Mental health is a key issue within the majority of universities. The support student receive is lacking as signposting is the main form of assistance. I believe individuals should receive follow up meetings when they have asked for help to avoid them possibly falling through the cracks and their mental health declining further.
