What relevant experience, skills and qualities do you have that make you a strong candidate for this elected position?
Drawing from my experience as a small-scale event organizer and holding non-academic leadership roles in previous educational institutions,
I have gained problem-solving and collaboration skills. Working as a physiotherapist in India further equipped me to address even the tiniest issues with significant impact. My goals, though seemingly modest, carry the potential for local, national, and global influence.
Some from personal experiences, while others from actively listening to my fellow students as a class representative.
My recent achievement you ask? Nailing a two-minute manifesto video shoot, conquering my fear of public speaking (obviously after multiple takes??)
Priority Aim 1
The aim is to introduce a British Sign Language(BSL) optional module at Robert Gordon University, prioritizing the School of Health Sciences.
This initiative aims to enhance students' CVs, foster inclusivity, and contribute to a sustainable and inclusive community.
The priority lies in equipping students with valuable communication skills, aligning with the RGU BSL Plan 2018-2024, and boosting the university's reputation.
To execute this, collaboration with the Director of Planning & Policy and Disability & Inclusion Manager and rekindling the existing BSL plan 2018-2024 is needed. The strategy involves curriculum development, departmental collaboration, and effective communication with students and RGU community.
Priority Aim 2
The aim is to promote innovative skill development among international students by organizing bi-monthly workshops on hair braiding, plaiting, and facials.
Recognizing the financial challenges faced by international students, this initiative empowers individuals to manage their finances effectively in self-care. By bringing these workshops to the campus, students can learn from each other, fostering a sense of community.
The goal is to reduce the financial burden on international students who often spend substantial amounts on external self-care services.
This aligns with ongoing efforts to address financial difficulties through flexible repayment options, ultimately enhancing students' skills and financial well-being.
Priority Aim 3
The aim is to promote inclusive scheduling in university clubs/societies events and memberships, prioritizing postgraduate student involvement.
Acknowledging the academic calendar disparity between undergraduate and postgraduate courses, the goal is to address the resulting challenges.
The priority arises from the adverse effects on postgraduate students' mental health, as limited involvement in extracurricular activities can lead to isolation.
The plan involves collaboration with societies and sports club leaders, advocating for awareness and equal representation. By fostering a more inclusive and diverse environment, the initiative aims to enhance the overall university experience and welfare for postgraduate students, ensuring engagement in extracurriculars.
What is the biggest issue currently facing RGU students, and how will you work with the rest of the Student Presidents and Vice Presidents to tackle this?
The pressing issue facing RGU students, aside from my primary goal, is the recent immigration rule affecting international students. The restriction on dependents' entry has led to significant mental health challenges for those separated from their partners and children abroad.
I aim to collaborate with fellow student leaders to address this issue. Proposing solutions like interactive sessions for coping strategies, acknowledging mental health impact, and fostering a sense of belonging through international cuisines during supper clubs and other student events. By advocating for advancements in support services, I aim to target the unique challenges posed by this immigration rule.
