I started taking more interest in gender equality and feminism a few years ago. I began watching two YouTubers called Contrapoints and Philosophy Tube who both made me want to learn more about social justice issues. I began reading a lot of books to do with feminism and gender equality. I love learning about people and their experiences, which is one of the reasons I’m studying journalism. I’m currently reading ‘Whipping Girl’ by Julia Serano, which is about trans feminism and it’s a brilliant read. I think since learning more about these issues has made me a more aware person and made me want to become a more compassionate person.
I think I would make a good Book Club Coordinator as I enjoy reading those sorts of books in my spare time anyway. I would love to discuss these topics with other people and hear their opinions. I think I could find some interesting books for the society to read and discuss.
I think I would also make a excellent Social Media/Events Coordinator as I love meeting and getting to know new people. I would really enjoy helping the society organise fun events or even do some activism in Aberdeen.
I think I would really enjoy being a Coordinator as gender inequality is still such a big issuesin so many ways. Even in Aberdeen, there was the gross Snapchat scandal where male university students were sharing private photos of female students. This only happened a few months ago. I think this would be a great opportunity to learn more about gender inequality issues and help in any way that I can.
Also - I love baking and will happily bribe anyone with brownies if they vote for me. ??
